An individual made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was made public, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the event.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion rose in the period preceding President Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that Maduro had been seized.

One account, which joined the platform recently and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However the market's assessment had jumped to eleven percent by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the first hours of Saturday, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on non-public details," said an industry expert.

A handful of other platform users also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Grows

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

A bill introduced on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from making trades on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a market.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have surged in popularity in recent years, with users able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. But it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the securities markets, but there are less oversight in the forecasting industry.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
