EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
