French authorities will start stopping migrant vessels in Channel following UK pressure
French officials have consented to begin stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the British leader wrote to the President urging him to back the plan and saying there currently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.
French authorities have rarely intervened to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered too great a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is essential that we deploy these tactics this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police representative states personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.
Notably, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible method to disable the engines of the boats.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant advancement, coming after a brief change towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which ceased when the previous government official departed from government.
This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and President, when French police were observed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.
Now French authorities will once more be permitted to intercept boats prior to they pick up migrant individuals from the beaches of northern France, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are presently delaying the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for methods to adjust to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been contacted for response.
